OCD Parent & Caregiver Peer Support Group | Nova Scotia [Canada]
Meeting Information:
Made possible with the support of the Canadian Mental Health Association (Nova Scotia division) and the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia, the primary purpose of the parent/caregiver peer support group is to provide a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment where parents and caregivers of kids, teens and young adults with OCD can connect, share experiences, and gain insights.
The group aims to foster a sense of community and understanding, helping members navigate the challenges of raising a child with OCD by offering emotional support and valuable resources.
This is a monthly, virtual peer support group, not a treatment group. We will NOT be assessing or diagnosing family members, rather, we will discuss topics like family accommodations, recommended resources, and self-care. Group members will offer support, compassion, and encouragement to each other.
GROUP GOALS
1. Provide Emotional Support: Create a non-judgmental space where parents and caregivers can express their feelings, share their struggles, and receive empathy and encouragement from others who understand their experiences.
2. Share Information and Resources: Facilitate the exchange of information, tips, and resources related to OCD, including, coping strategies, and educational materials, to help members make informed decisions and feel more empowered.
3. Educate and Raise Awareness: Offer educational sessions and invite guest speakers to increase understanding of OCD, its symptoms, and management techniques, thereby helping parents and caregivers to better support their children.
4. Promote Coping and Self-Care Strategies: Provide tools and techniques for stress management and self-care to ensure that parents and caregivers maintain their own well-being while supporting their children.
5. Build a Supportive Network: Foster connections among members to create a strong, supportive network where parents and caregivers can build relationships, share advice, and offer mutual assistance outside of regular meetings.
6. Encourage Positive Outcomes: Share success stories and positive outcomes to inspire hope and motivate members, demonstrating that effective management and improvement are possible.
